ABBA’s “Summer Night City” isn’t just a catchy pop tune, it’s a love letter to Stockholm. Released in 1978, the song was one of the first creations for their upcoming Voulez-Vous album. With their previous hit, “Take A Chance On Me,” still fresh on the charts, pressure was on to deliver a new smash.

“Summer Night City” emerged from Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus’ fondness for their Swedish hometown. The balmy summer nights of Stockholm became the inspiration, and the song’s energy reflects that carefree, romantic vibe. Interestingly, the track was among the first recorded at their recently built Polar Music Studio.

Despite its potential, the recording process wasn’t smooth sailing. ABBA reportedly wasn’t entirely satisfied with the final product, particularly a 43-second intro that was ultimately cut. Even with these reservations, “Summer Night City” became a single in September 1978. It wasn’t an international chart-topper, but it did hold a special place – becoming ABBA’s last No. 1 single in their native Sweden.

Intriguingly, the song took on a bit of a different form during live performances. On their 1979 world tour, ABBA included the originally intended intro that was missing from the released single. This slight variation adds another layer to the song’s history.
